1954 Johnson 5.5 carb leaking gas

Just got this engine. It's a CD-11. It runs, but with the engine level after a minute or so liquid gas comes out the intake 'mufflers' (baffles? what's the proper name for them?), a fair bit actually. I'm assuming the float is buggered up somehow and sticking open but was wondering if someone knew a quick fix or am I looking at a carb rebuild? The carb is the type that has the built in filter on the bottom.

2nd question. My Seloc manual only starts at 1956. Can I assume the 1954 5.5hp is the same as the 1956 5.5hp or will I need a new manual?

thanks, Steve

You're looking at a carb rebuild - the needle valve is leaking or the float is sunk. But it's an easy task.

Your Seloc will be just fine for your '54. I don't think there's really anything significantly changed.

Get you're carb kit from a Johnson/Evinrude dealer rather than the aftermarket kit so you can get a new plastic float to replace the old cork one.

Somehow when they wrote the Seloc manual they forgot the most important part of rebuilding the carb, which is removing and cleaning the idle orifaces behind the soft metal plug on the top of the carb. Add these:

Disassembling:
Your new carb kit ought to come with a replacement, slightly convex core plug. Before proceeding, make sure it is the same size as as the one you are about to remove. If all is well, drill a 1/8" hole in the centre of the core plug. Then insert a small screwdriver or nail through the hole, and pry the plug out. It is very important that while drilling and prying, you do not let anything damage the surfaces underneath the plug. So restrict the drill bit from piercing much more than 1/16" beyond the core plug.

Assembling:
Coat the outside edge of the core plug with a slight amount of fuel proof gasket sealer. (Although this step isn't strictly necessary, I find it helps seal the plug and saves problems down the road.) Now place the plug convex side up atop the boss where the plug rests. Then, using a small drift and hammer, tap the top of the core plug so it expands until it jams tightly against the core plug's socket. Give it one extra tap for good measure.

Finally, have a look at this site here:

Be sure to have a look at the PROCEDURE page.

I hope that helps! Oh, and those intake dealyos are called intake silencers. :D

That was great advice. And the link you sent was awesome, it really helped. Well I got the kit and did the rebuild last night. was pretty easy (hope I didn't bugger it up!). Took about an hour once I got it off. Will hopefully try it out today. thx.

Rebuilding the carb was pretty easy and it worked well. Think I will buy another kit and rebuild my other 5.5 now as I can get em for C$28 here :) thx.

I'm glad to hear it worked out well. These are great little motors and they're easy to work on. Easy to get parts for too.

The water pumps are a little involved on these since the powerhead has to come off, but I think that's what your looking at next. At least replace the impellers. (~$15). I don't know if the dealer parts have switched to the plastic housed pump, if they do check out marinemanifold.com for aftermarket parts.

Yeah, I've had to change the lower unit before... not as easy as later models. I also have a 1958 Johnson 10hp and it's very easy to drop the lower unit thru the 'lil window. I find that other impellars I have changed are always 'welded on' and not easy to get off, usually you have to shred them!
