Can anyone tell me how to replace the shift lever O Ring in the lower unit ... I have looked and looked and I can't seem to figure out how to get at the little bugger ...

Thanks ... Zbosco

there is a brass bushing holding it in. I made a tool out of a large drift punch that would just grab the bushing and not the case of the lower unit. I had to grind it down a bit. then you just pound it out. can't remember if it comes out from the top or the bottom. Also try a little heat on the outside of the case right where the bushing is on the inside. once you get the bushing out the o-ring will be in the end of the bushing. good luck

The special tool is a 5/16" rod with diameter turned down to 1/4" on the end. The 1/4" portion prevents mooshing the hole in the bushing. A piece of 5/16" rod will knock it out, but you may have to fix up the bushing a bit before reinstalling.

I made one of those for my '58 10hp bushing and it worked like a charm.
