after try to insert the lower unit back on,(i have engine upside down on table i know the splines were lined up as the white lithium greace i sprayed on shaft and new o-ring is pushed back to within 1/4 of bottoming out, could the o-ring be the problem?,or is there some other trick ive rotated the prop while in gear and slowly pulled the rope to rotate the motor trying for allignment it should go but im stuck, just that last little bit and i can bolt it back up,could something have shifted positions when i changed the impeller?

doesnt seem like the o ring would shim it out that much... have you tried some love taps w a dead blow?

I usuall start w the mini mallet, then dead blow, then ball peen... mini sledge... sledge..... i could go on.

Generally turning the motor upside down is not the recommended procedure. The reason is that the drive shaft can slide out of the lower unit. The shaft and the impeller drive pin didn't sneak out a bit and get out of position did it? That's really the only things in there that can cause you problems. Good luck

Cheers..............Todd

Edit: But then again your drive shaft would have been bottomed out in the crankshaft splines wouldn't they? Hmmm, well the water pipe and the shift linkage are the only things left. I think I'd still turn things right side up and try again. Good luck!

the drive shaft can slip up, dislodging the pin for the impeller, and can be wedge on the impeller. take it back down get the impeller realigned, and insert from the bottom.

If the o-ring is too fat, it won't go in. Also, if you put too much grease on it, it won't go. And lastly, if there is something stuck up in the hole ???

Or is there too much grease in there trapping up top and holding the pressure from fitting?

Is the shift rod bumping against the connector, such as the shift lever in reverse, and gearcase in forward?
