Believe it or not I am making progress but still have some questions...I am replacing the seals in lower unit and came accross the following situation. On the drive shaft at the point where it goes thru the case there is a brass sleeve with a couple of holes in it. I believe that this sleve was held in position by the oil seal which had flat surfaces on both sides. The new oil seal has a flat surface on the upper side and the rubber on the lower side. The result is that the bushing no longer is held in place. It can move up and down slightly and can rotate. I assume that the holes in the bushing are supposed to line up with a slot in the casing which would allow oil to get up into the bushing lubricating the drive shaft. The new seal does not go down far enough nor is it constructed in such a way that the bushing stays in one position. Is this ok?? Or is it test the serrra rebuild kit has the wrong seal. Thanks, cliff

You may find that some of these units had a " full floating " bushing.----So there is nothing wrong and no need to worry !

What racer said is true, most of them have a floating bushing, free to spin in the case. However, you bring up an interesting point that I've never thought about---possibility of contacting the DS seal lip. H-m-m-m--, gottta think about that.
