1955 evinrude fastwin 15 horse

FR i hope your out there dead right about the oval plate,got new impeller in now stuck going the other way,on re assem. it wont fall down the last 1/4 inch,got shift rod,water tube,and drive shaft lined up,tried rotating prop in gear,nothing ,dont want to force any thing,whats the secret?help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the shift rod and the shifter need to be in the same gear for it to go together.
