hi guys, i have a leak problem on my good 1956 johnson, a couple of weeks back i ran out of gas while running the motor and after that i had a hard time starting the motor up again so i figured something from the bottom of the gas tank had been sucked into the carburator or something so i toke the screws/bolts/rods (don't know what they are called) than control the low and high speed out and started the motor hoping something will come out thru the holes, whatever i did worked for a little bit but only on slow speed, if i tried to get the boat to hight speeed the motor will just get back to iddle, anyway i took the speed controls out again but this time i blew compressed air thru the lines, well that kind of worked. the thing is, now the carburator leaks gas thru the choke especially at high speed and by leaks i mean pour gas out. any ideas on what is going on and how to fix it.
another couple of quick questions... what is the best setting for putting those controls back, from screwing them all the way in how many turns back for low and high speeds and does my 1956 30hp have an alternator???
in advance thank you sooo much for reading... and please stay safe out on the water, we lost just too many lifes in our area in just a couple of months due to drowning. thanks

Sounds like a bad float or stuck float valve. Sounds like a carb clean/rebuild is required. That motor doesn't have an alternator.

The carburetor might have been ok till you screwed around with it. Have the coils ever been changed? Your story is classic.

ok, just came back from the water, here is the deal... the motor works...but,after reading on how to set the speed controls the motor will not hit top speed it sounds like it wants to get there but it kind of jerks you know like it wants to suck in as much gas as it needs but does not get enough and every minute of so the is like and explosion (really and explosion_ inside) WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT! IS IT NORMAL???, now do i have to open the high speed more or do instead close it more, seems like everytime i mess with those controls the motor can not be started for a full day, really i try and try and try and get sore hands and will not start so i want to do right this time. is it better to have the controls more on the closed or open side DOES IT MATTER???.
this motor is a wonderful piece of art i will tell you and just don't want to kill it.
where do i get a carb rebuild kit and how hard is it to do. (i really want to do it myself i just love my motor to much to let some else put their hands on her LOL:D) THANKS:cool:

Pull the carb and clean it well. Then put the high and low speed needles back in, per the carb instructions already mentioned. You may have to replace the packing nuts for both...yours are pretty old and probably worn out. Sounds like you have crud in the needle seat or the carb is not venting and is drinking/slurping gas. An abused carb, one with worn out high speed needle seat will flood easily and run poorly, or not at all. Used carbs aren't hard to find, though. When you seat the needles, gently seat them only hand tight...cranking down harder ruins the taper/seat of the needle.
