1956 30hp big twin pro shaft seal direction

ok sooo the seal housing is a skinny piece with the two holes to punch the old seal out.

My new seal seal is slightly different than the original so I can’t tell the direction it’s supposed to be installed

its a newer type seal that has the flat end and the open end where you can see the spring and rubber

you can can only install it one way through the housing. So what way faces me. The open side or the closed side.

also after installed which was does the housing face?
rubber o ring facing the prop or the other way. Thanks

I assume you're talking about the prop shaft seal carrier. The garter spring faces the lube oil - inside after you install the carrier. The O ring also faces inside. Most propshaft seal carriers have a recessed hub that the O ring sets in, and then seats on the housing bore.
