I have has this motor for a little while. I picked it up some one had already started to go through it. There were no coils, pick ups or condensers. I got the whole plate off Ebay for $40. unfortunately the coil covers have cracks, but installed all of the stuff anyways and no spark. I am about to start taking it apart again to measure the resistance in the coils. My main question is how much compression should this engine have? When I checked before, with both plugs removed and a few strokes I had 30 PSI per cylinder dry. Is this sufficient? Do you guys have any other advice for em while I am getting into this? I have been a diesel mechanic for over 20 years, however boat engines are a totally different beast. Thanks in advance.

Don't bother trying to save the coils. New ones are available right here on iboats 18-5181.

30 psi doesn't sound good. Doesn't sound right, either. Try another gauge and squirt some oil in through the carb. Not a lot, but enough to film everything inside. Should be at least 80 psi in each hole.

As stated above, all original coils are junk, don't waste your time.

I would start first though by determining what is going on with the powerhead before I put money into it. Pull the head and inspect the gasket and mating surfaces. Then inspect the bore of the cylinder.

Let us know what you find.

Ok, new compression test using my gauge for checking fuel pressure on trucks, oil in carb and I'm getting 30 to 40 PSI per cylinder. I pulled the head off. the bolts were fairly tight, not all took the same amount of force to remove. The head came off with a slight pull. The gasket didn't seem to be damaged and no signs of leaking (atleast from a heavy duty point of view). The cylinder walls are so so. there is no heavy scoring but looks like there was some slight rust and no cross hatches, I paid special attention to the top side of the bore because i assume that that area would have the least amount of lubrication due to gravity. I took off the gasket and it took more effort to remove. I'm assuming that the previous owner took the head off and stuck it back on. I will upload photos in a few minutes. Let me know what you guys think.

I would pull the intake port cover and check the rings for looseness and springy-ness. Good chance they're carbon stuck... Those compression numbers will not get you a running motor.
