First of all, let me say that I have read all the archived posts on carb rebuilds that I could find, and yes, it was a huge boost of information that lifted my confidence factor.
I'm looking for comments at this point.

Does this float need to be replaced? Yes its cork but seems to have some sort of clear coating on it.

Does the "plug" at the top of the pic need to be removed ? Before or after soaking?

And where in the heck are all these parts gonna go that came in the rebuild kit?
Jeeze, and whats with the "carpenters square" looking tool that came w the kit?

Re: 1956 carb rebuild

If the float floats in gas, should be good. You should pull that welch plug, since you have a kit to replace it. There's a chamber underneath that has the low speed needle tip (input) and a couple ports to feed the carb throat for low speed operation.. just make sure they're clear.

Carb kits typically cover many year's carb models, and there are most always extra parts.. just use what you need.

Good luck!

The carpenter square thing is for float height adjustment.----On these you just need to turn it all upside down and float should be level / parallel with carburetor body.

Use an awl and hammer to pull the plug. Tap the awl into the plug with the hammer, then pry it out.

To replace, drop in the new plug, then use a socket extension and hammer to tap it back it. A few quick raps will do it. I like to go a little extra and add sealer as well, in case there is an air leak. Your wife's clear nail polish will work here.

I like to set the float with the unhinged end, just slightly higher than the hinged end. This ensures that the needle seats when the float chamber fills, ensuring it does not flood. Just a little trick. You still want it square though side to side.

As stated, toss that float in some gas, if she floats, you are good to go.

kfa,
great link. Thanks.
I've really got to get this thing done and in the water. The wife has started making noises about a
new motor and I just dont want to go there. She just wants to be in the boat and I cant really blame her.
