I am going to replace the coils and points condensor on my 1956 10 HP Evinrude. I was also maybe going to repalce the plug wires and boots. Is there anyway that is easy to get the plug wires out? I see they are held on to the bottom of the points and coil plate by a screw. But for the life of me I cannot get a screw driver under there to release the screws.
Does this coil and point mounting plate come off easily. It looks like there may be 2 screws going down from the top holding this plate stationary. I did not want to remove anything in case I mess up the timming advance etc.
Does anyone off hand know the length of each plug wire ?

The plate is held on by four bolts - two actually are the long bolts going through the coils and there are two more which are shorter. I believe the plate only goes on one way. Once removed, replacing the wires is a breeze. Not sure of the wire length - I usually get long enough wires and attach them to the coils and cut them off to the proper length after everything is re-installed.

These old motors are pretty simple to work on. Often a good jerk on the wire or... (this may sound funny) but try to unscrew the wire from the coil. Some (not sure which make) had a srew type connection inside the coil. Look inside your replacement coils... If nothing else works, cut the cables off. You're going to replace them anyway.

When replacing the wires use wire (not the carbon resistor type wire) you find on auto's. You can still find new coil and spark plug boots albeit; they are getting tougher to find.
