I have picked up a 2nd motor, already have one that runs great. Looking to restore this one completely, my question is the powerhead.
where do I go the buy the internal parts? Do I need to have the cylinders honed? Who sells the internal parts for this motor?

iboats sells parts, and they are the ones sponsoring this board.
If the cylinders and/or pistons are damaged(scoring, grooved, or worn out) the block will need to be bored and oversized pistons. If they are ok then a deglazing and new rings should be all that is needed

Do a compression test to find out if it really does need to be rebuilt. Unless it is seized then disregard this post.

The motor runs ok, I am looking to restore this completely. Not sure yet if cylinders are scored. Just interested in wanting to take this motor to prime condition. Basically an overhaul. This particular motor is only 2 numbers off of the original motor that my Grandpa bought with the boat in 1957! I have been running another just like it for the last 25 years. Want to fully restore this one, complete overhaul and paint. Still running the same boat!!!

flyingscott, I am wanting to take this motor to a prime level, already have one just like it. Just like someone with a vehicle that wants to do a full restoration. Am I thinking too much?

I think so, those are VERY well oiled motors you may be looking for an issue you don't have.

I agree. As far as I'm concerned this is one of the best motors made. Just don't want to put the effort in making this look brand new, only to find out that I should have rebuilt the powerhead.

jimmbo. I am looking to take this motor to a full overhaul, not having any luck finding where to get the internal parts for the powerhead. I just want to do a full restoration on this motor, I have been doing carb overhauls and lower end work for years. This particular motor is only 2 numbers off the original motor that my grandpa bought with the 14ft Duracraft boat in 1957, that I am still using. I don't want to put time and money to make it look like new only to find out I shoud have gone through the powerhead

As he specializes in old OMC stuff, try Dan Gano at
http://www.ganotech.com/

If he doesnt have what you need, I bet he'll know where to get it.

You should get a parts manual for it so you can specify part#s not just looking for "internal powerhead" parts. Dan might know the part#s you need off the top of his head, but if you give him a specific# it should save you both some time.

Good luck

Drop us a pix of your '57 Duracraft, what model?

And some of the 15hp motors, esp the nearly sequential ser# motors.

Don't have original motor that my Grandpa bought. I do know that it was 15016-15024. The one I picked up is 15022. The other motor is 17469. Will have to take picture of the boat later. Going to repaint boat later this year. I work in the aircraft industry so I have access to all the latest primer and paint for aluminum. Just want to do a full restoration to this motor. Thanks for the website for more info. Having an extra motor keeps me on the water!

For parts:
1. Get a model-specific parts book
2. Don't forget your local Evinrude dealer. You'd be surprised at how many OEM parts are still available. But the dealer won't give you the time of day unless you supply the part numbers. He probably doesn't have the book either. But his attitude improves if all he has to do is take your money and add the number to his regular parts order. He knows where to get NLA parts too, if he is willing to work with you. Treat him well and get him interested in your project.

Iboats will not carry what you will need, other than some of the tune up items. like impeller, points, condensors, etc....

For parts go to aomci.org and post a wanted ad in the classifieds section. There are many parts vendors there that will be able to help.

Thanks to everyone on your reply's. I have another question on the 2 motors. I am going to do a compression check on both of these tonight. I know that both cylinders need to be close to the same. Is there a minimum psi that will determine if I am looking at a rebuild? Also, is there some people out there that do restorations on these that will talk to someone like me that will do all work themselves?
