I have to replace the water pump and can’t find any reliable info. Does the power head have to come off to remove the lower drive?

Yes it does.----Fairly easy.---Just 7 screws , some hoses.----Allows you to inspect that mechanical seal on top of driveshaft.----No worries about shift adjustment.
