Hello, I am about to start working on this motor and had a few questions before I start. I do a lot of woodwork and have built my 3D printer and CNC machine, but have never looked into gasoline engines. I have the RJE 18-C model which appears to be in very good original condition. I have purchased some parts and am planning to give it a tune up and convert it to a fuel pump. I have gratefully read over the “how to wake a sleeping outboard” and read information on the conversion. Before I start, I wonder if anyone could tell me what this part is (see photo), I couldn’t locate it in the parts manual, my next question is, are my only options to go with original throttle and shift controls? I started to chicken out on doing the work myself and called two different pro’s, neither of them wanted to work on it, so I am down to my hands and all of your brains. I have only been on a boat a few times when I was a child, so everything is new to me. Oh, if anyone has the service manual and owners manual for this model I would greatly appreciate it!

That part is a " cut out " switch.------Designed to cut spark to one cylinder should a high revving in neutral develop.----It is very reliable and do not remove it.

Ah, thank you! And is this a fuel filter?
Also if I convert this for 12 volt would anyone know what model of choke solenoid I should use?

Yes, it is a fuel filter. The choke solenoid from a 1957 35hp is a direct fit/replacement.

What is your objection to the original controls? But yes, there are other options.

My only objections to the original controls are that they are a little hard to find in good condition, and more importantl . I have never driven a boat before and thought I may want to look into a foot pedal so that I could keep both hands on the wheel. I do also want to make sure I have the safety teather.
