Hi Guys I'm looking at possibly purchasing a 1956 johnson 30 hp outboard and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on that motor -- good or bad. I think 56 was the only year that motor was made is that a problem I should be concerned about. The motor I'm looking has been gone through and restored to somewhat original condition and seller says its runs great and I should not have any problems with it. I would be greatful for any thoughts from you guys on the motor.

thanks

Well, it will probably need lead substitute in the gas. And it will leave a nice 'rainbow' ring around your boat when you stop....

Do you have a old(er) boat to go with it?

Yes, I have a 1957 wooden boat. I have pics posted in the boat restoration thread " thoughts on motor for project ".

It will not need lead substitute. It'll be perfectly happy running unleaded 87 octane pump gas mixed at 24:1 with your favorite TCW3 rated oil. Lead additives are for vintage 4-strokes only...

As for the motor, it is a dandy. The 30s are solid motors - real stump pullers. It is about 36 cubic inches and is essentialy the same as the previous year's 25hp, with some changes to the cylinder head and piston dome to achieve the extra five ponies. It was part of a long line of "Big Twin" style motors from Johnrude that began in 1951 with the 25s, evolving into 30, 35, 40, 28 and 33 horse versions before bowing out in the early 1980s as the 40hp WorkTwin. As such, there are still a lot of them out there in regular service and parts are cheap and plentiful.

Prop it to peak around 4500 RPM and enjoy!

Using Amsoil or other synthetic 2 stroke outboard motor oil at 24:1 will greatly diminish the smoke and oil sheen you'll get using conventional oil.

Well said advice/opinion. Only one caveat to add...if you get it and bond with it, don't ever loan it out. Kind of like loaning stuff to your BIL...big risk, little return.

Please...post KNOWLEDGE...

Well, that's what I was told about my 1954 30hp Evinrude - back in 1983. I haven't run it since then, and I guess that bad info just stuck with me.
