Replacing the seals on my lower unit on my 1956 Johnson 30hp.

Does anyone know how hard you have to hit the Shift Rod Bushing to get it out? I am afraid I am going to break something!

If you have the correct shift rod seal remover, there shouldn't be any worries. Just make sure the lower unit is sitting on a piece of wood, so it doesn't get dammaged.

Ok, should have the tool that F_R makes next week hopefully, then I will give it a try. I tried it using a Spade drill bit (Because it is similar 1/4" end with a 5/16" Shaft) but it wouldn't get the seal to budge one bit. Thanks for the advice on the block of wood, I didn't think of that (that would have cost me). I tried it on some thick card board with the drill, but I didn't hit it really hard I was afraid to wreck it.

Sometimes you have to really smack it with a hammer to get it out. They dont pop out easy, not hard either, but youll have to hit it with about the force of driving in a nai.

Be sure to drive it out in the right direction. Some drive out from the bottom and some from the top.

Re: 1956 Johnson 30hp Lower Unit Seal Replacement

Got the tool and drove it out fine. Practiced on the first lower unit and it came out pretty easy. Went to the second lower unit (the one I am rebuilding) and it took a little more force to get it out.

I have another question. What can I clean these parts with before I use the 3m 847 on them? Can I use degreaser or acetone? Anything I should watch out for when cleaning?

Thanks!

They're aluminum. Any standard de-greaser will do.

Any degreaser is fine. I've used mineral spirits for years. I guess in these days, you have to consider disposal of it when it has exceeded it's useful life. Can't just dump it out like we used to.

Oh boy, the stuff I have watched my grandpa do. "Grandpa you can't do that!" "Why can't I have been doing it for years."

Does anyone know how long you have to wait for the 3m 847 Gasket maker to dry before you can dunk the lower unit?

I've put mine in an hour later before.. I figure it's supposed to be airtight, should be ok! Not sure how long I'm supposed to wait though... BY now you're fine...
