Hi guys any help would be greatly appreciated! I am trying to put a new impeller on my outboard and I cannot seem to figure out how to pull the lower end unit out. I have everything loose but the shifter linkage is one SOLID rod that’s curved at the bottom and attached to the shifter at the top with no connection in the middle. And I don’t see a way to take the shifter off without breaking something in the process. I’m stumped.

Facts------You have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod.------Second fact , that is not a difficult job.----Third fact , there is no way that the shift mechanism can get out of adjustment with this set up.----Brilliant simple engineering I say.

You may have to pull the powerhead on that model.. Someone else with more knowledge can confirm. EDIT He beat me to it while I was writing.

I believe the powerhead is held on with 7 bolts - remove those and it lifts off. You most likely will need to replace the base gasket when you remove the powerhead.

Inspect the critical mechanical seal when powerhead is off.----Replace o-ring and gasket on that seal assembly.

So you took the gearcase apart in a futile attempt to disconnect the shift rod? You aren't the first one and won't be the last.

if the base gasket needs replacing make certain you order the proper one they have similar layouts but only one fits
304314 fits 1956 cd and ad

if it is not damaged... you can always risk it and keep the base gasket
