I recently did a tune up on my 1956 evinrude 3hp lightwin (coils, condensors, points, carb rebuild/clean, impeller, and plugs). I took it out today and it misses pretty bad. I remember removing wires from old coils and the wires were hard to remove and looked in bad condition. When i tested for spark, one of the wires seemed to spark whenever it felt like it, maybe 1 spark out of 5 times it should have sparked. I've been busy and forgot about that issue till today. I'm assuming i should replace wires but don't know where to get them. Are they a "universal" type of wire and if so where do i find a wire kit? Thanks.

Universal.....yep.....It's the kind of wire that is constructed with 'solid wire' internally. Avoid the type you could get at auto parts stores.

Sounds like your coils are in bad shape. The plastic is probably deteriated. The wire should be easy to pull out of them.

Old coils did fall apart when i removed them, i replaced them when i did the $115 tune-up:eek:.

One more thing, i have a feeling the points aren't set right. I used a cheap harbor freight DVOM to test and think i'll re-check with a "Fluke" DVOM.

You use a DVOM to set the points?

anyway, the HF one probably works fine.
did you get the digital or the needle kind?

I had a fluke, it must have been 20 years old. I replace it with the HF one

Yes i do, i set the gap to .020" then use the DVOM to make sure points are opening between the 2 timing marks on flywheel. I checked and one set of points is dead on at .020" and the other was off a hair but still opens between timing marks, just fine tuning. I got the digital meter.
