a recent owner to a vintage sportwin 10hp model 10012. The previous owner told me that the motor had new water pump, plugs, carb, coils recently replaced. I took out last weekend for first time. Pressure tank that came with motor. I replaced the dual line and replaced the O rings. Put fresh gas/oil 24:1. Started fine but ran a bit rough at first. Adjusted high speed needle to 4 and it seem to run fine at WOT. The next day ran ok but noticed a bit more rough running. idled down and adjust low speed and that seemed to be ok. Then WOT for 15 to 1/2 hr but started to run rough again and miss so I headed back to dock and put on trailer. Later that day I noticed a white-ish oily substance coming out of exhaust port. Enough that it pooled under motor on the ground. Any suggestions....did the head gasket go? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks William

That is unburnt fuel, emulsified with water. Some is normal, but it will be worse if the motor is mis-firing, as you say yours is. The drainage is a symptom, something else is causing the mis-fireing. There will always be some drainage, so don't be concerned about that.

Sounds like there may be some crud in the carb somewhere. I usually don't put much stock in what the PO says he's done to the engine. If it were mine, I'd first check compression and spark, and if that's ok, then order a carb rebuild kit. How is the tank? Is it clean inside? I recently rebuilt a carb for a friend and the motor ran great on my tank. When the owner took it home and ran it with his tank, it started doing just what you describe. His tank was full of rust, and the carb was plugged up. Had to be taken apart and cleaned again.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. Believe it or not but the gas tank was very clean inside. Minimal if any rust. I did rinse out the tank before putting in fresh gas. I hear you can get carb kits at NAPA?

NAPA kit won't include the float. If your float is good, get the NAPA kit. If you also need the float, go to a Johnnyrude Dealer.
