I recently aquired this oldie but goody...the engine fired up with out a problem but will not idle when I move the lever to the run position....I'm going to mix up a new batch of fuel at 50:1, replace the plugs but my question would be: there are two adjustment holes on the front of the motor cover for the carb, which one is the idle, which is the lean/rich?...what would be the best procedure for adjusting these for proper operation? any info would be appreciated

Hi Lorco,
These motors did not idle very good so you may have the best you will get. The top hole is the idle and the bottom is the highspeed. Set the highspeed 1st then the lowspeed. If it spits back out the carb it is set to lean.

Thanx, Corm! What is the best way to set the high speed setting on one of these?....in a tank?... or on a lake?.... do i tighten down the screw then back it open a 1/8 turn until it runs good? any advise would be helpful

Hi Lorco,
The best way is on the water, but it is the hardest. Bouncing around in the boat with a screwdriver isn't always fun. Turn the high speed in untill engine dies out then turn it out 1/4 turn. It will be slightly rich like this, but the engine will idle better with the over balanced adjustment. Then adj the idle the best you can. If it backfires out the carb the idle is to lean.

Lorco, Don't want to slow down any progress with stupid questions, but, doesn't '57/'58 predate the use of 50:1 fuel/oil ratios? Don't want to see you burn it!
