Appreciate all the great info here.

Looking for a manual for my (new to me) electric start 1957 35hp Evinrude outboard. It starts! With push-button electric start.

I have a water pump coming and will lube the lower unit. Any thoughts on what a prudent person would change/do right away on these old motors, just in case?

It has been sitting for more than two years.

Go to www.outboardbooks.com for the reprint of the original, Tink.

In addition to the wise choices you have made, I think I would overhaul the Carb and give her new Champion J4C plugs, gapped at .030".

Good luck. :)

If it starts right up, that's good! I'd still check compression to see where you're at. You can also check condition of coils by removing the plate on top of the flywheel. You can also clean and set the points to 0.020" through the opening. When you drain the lower unit oil, if it is milky, you probably have a leaking seal. When you pull the lower unit to replace the impeller, that is the time to replace any bad seals. If properly maintained, that old motor will run for another 50 years!

Thanks everyone. I'll start a thread when I get into it. starting with the impeller and clean fuel. Lower unit lube next, after a 5-minute shakedown (hopefully on the canal!)

I've replaced coils before, but admit I don't know how to adjust points... yet.

Also considering a gasket kit for the original pressurized (leaky) tank.

: )
