1957 evinrude 18 hp tiller.

Did tune up and runs great.

Problem: put tiller in ?start position? pull cord and the tiller grip and ignition plate immediately rotates back to the ?stop position?. Thus, I can only get the dang thing started if someone stands there and holds the grip in the start position while I crank it. it has killer compression and my right arm looks like pop-eye?s. and if I let the throttle grip go freely it immediately rotates to the stop position and dies.

So, is there any way to tighten up the rotation of the ignition plate? I pulled the flywheel again and looked and looked and looked, but can?t seem to find why there is so much play from the armature plate control arm through the plate and back to the twist grip? Usually these things are very sticky.

Coils are mounted too close to flywheel (or armature plate has lateral play), and coils are hitting the magnet as it spins past, yanking the plate clockwise. Loosen coils and set their laminations even with the mounting 'boss' below them. If your armature plate has ANY lateral play, it'll raise hell with your point gap (and coil-magnet spacing). If there is play, lift armature plate off ( 4 Phillips head bolts hold it on), and you'll see the 'boss) it rides on. You want to 'peen' the sides of that boss w/ hammer and nail @ 12/3/6/and9 o'clock positions. What that does is raise a bit of metal around each peen, and that will take out the armature plate slop. Peen a little, check, peen some more (same spots), check again etc until the lateral play is gone and there is slight resistance when turning plate. Put a little grease on that bearing surface, re-assemble, and you're good to go.

Good luck!

It sounds like you have some friction from the flywheel to the armature.

If the ring is installed upside down it can create issues. I did that once.

There is friction. The coils are rubbing against the flywheel. The coils are new. I will try resetting them and check the boss. thank you guys. that is great help. Awesome.
