Please help! I'm running out of beer! Watch the video, enjoy a little Ting Tings in the background before I start her up.

1957 Evinrude 35 Video

And the commentary: I start it with the choke half-on and throttle in "start". put it in gear, turn choke off and it dies. Restart, gear, choke off, hold throttle up, play with carb knobs and it revs up, holding throttle at "start". Suddenly it starts its usual shimmying, bolts unscrew themselves, and it dies. I can only ever keep it running for a couple minutes.

So far:

  • Cleaned carb and installed new carb kit.
  • Tore apart LU and replaced bearings, water pump, seal kit.
  • Popped flywheel, new ignition kit, new plugs Champion J8C (couldn't find 4 or 6c at store).
  • Compression is 102 both cylinders via $7.99 gauge from Harbor Freight (score!) also tested spark with their lightbulb tester, which flashes when I crank on both cylinders (see below).

I noticed after testing the compression with this setup that there was some black gunk left on the bottom of the attachment that screws into the cylinder, mostly just from the top one.

Here are a set of plugs I ran in the engine for maybe 5 or 10 minutes before.

This engine had been sitting for who knows how many years. It feels so good to have her running THIS well, but I can't take her out like this! So close! No cigar! I'm looking for that cigar, fellas! Any ideas?

I set both mixture screws 3/4 turn out as per manual, but I'm starting to think we're running too lean, and pushing the choke in puts it into that lean zone where the rpms spike and starts missing every few revolutions?

Open the low speed 1.5 turns. Have you run it in a barrel of water? I don't see a lot of water coming out the exhaust bypass in the leg. Should be squirting out of there pretty good. I have the same motor (57 Lark) and water flows pretty strong down the leg. Sooo - I'm thinking it may be getting too hot. Can you put your finger on the head for 3 seconds? Does water sizzle if you splash a little on the head? Motor will stall if it's too hot. Compression readings seem a little low - are you taking readings while cranking with the starter? I crank mine for 3-4 seconds and my readings are usually around 123-125. A decarb with Seafoam may be in order. Don't worry about the black on the end of the guage. Try to get some Champion J6C plugs. I think most auto parts stores have them. My Parts Plus store had them on the shelf. And gap them to .030". You should only have to choke that motor for about 30 seconds when cold, and then not at all to re-start. Oh, and DON'T rev that motor up so high in neutral on those muffs.

Re: 1957 Evinrude 35 Video

Thanks everybody! I adjusted the idle mixture more than a full turn out from where I had it and things improved instantly. I'll find those J6C plugs, but it seems to be happy for the time being.

lindy - It was hard to see in the video with the harsh light, but water does actually fly quite forcefully from that top relief port. And now that it's not running so lean, the flywheel is staying cool to the touch after a few minutes of running.

If you don't have one and you want one, send me a Private Message, with your email address, and I'll send you a copy of the service manual for your motor.

I just went through similar issues with my '58 35 HP. My lack of experience prevented me from tightening the packing nuts around the high and low speed needles enough (I didn't want to overtighten them). Anyway, the needles were "adjusting" themselves while the engine was running. I could adjust them and get it running well for a bit and then it woud eventually dies. I tightened them enough that they will not move by themselves and it runs great now.

Yes! Which is exactly what happened just after this last video was shot! It fired up and idled awesome, I headed for our permanent dock, and it just kept running crappier and crappier until it stalled just at the inlet to the canal we dock at.

So, since I'm still waiting for new packing nuts, I took her out again, let my dad drive, and just sat back there dialing it in, and gaff taped them down, which hopefully gives me a couple days out before the nuts arrive on Wednesday.

Watch out that you don't overheat the motor. I don't think that is the correct hose attachment for that type of motor, it should be run in a barrel with the water level well above the water pump.
I am sure someone will come along and correct me if I am wrong.

My carb kit came with new packing washers (little cork o-rings, it actually came with a few extra). I didn't replace the nuts, but I did replace the washers, and then just tightened them until the needles would just barely move if I tried to turn them.

Sounds great! Nice work! I have a 1957 35hp Big Twin on my 1959 Glastron Fireflite. My runs just as nicely as yours after doing the same work to mine as you did to yours. Just took it out to watch the fireworks. I love that outboard!

I have found that sometimes these carbs like two of the cork pack washers in there. Just a suggestion if yours start to move again.

Best of luck and have a great holiday with that sweet running motor!

Thanks, I'll do exactly that once the new ones arrive. I got the packing rings with the kit, then realized there was nothing on the carb to hold them in. Which is probably one reason why the last owner never got it running... there was a little chunk of plastic in the high-speed hole like one broke off sometime long ago.

Cool, there was some packing already in there when I took it apart, so I'll use that and double up!
