I have a 1957 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin and when I pulled the boat on the trailer today I saw this stuff on the motor. I just bought this thing so I'm not sure if it's normal. Any suggestions/ source for parts? I had read something earlier about lower seals, I imagine it would take a service manual to change those correct? It was coming out from two places, the hold indicated by the red circle, and the hole next to the prop.

Please help,

The holes you indicate are drains that drain water from the leg.

I think what you are seeing is unburnt oil from the fuel mixed with water. You are presumably running a 20:1 mix

Check your gear case oil. If that is still "clear and bright" you have nothing to worry about but i dont think these older motors are sealed as well as newer ones so a little milkiness might be expected

Read http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=207285

A manual would be advisable before attempting to replace gearcase seals

what brand/ type of oil should I put in the lower unit? I know the manual says hypoid (?) oil but that was before the days of synthetics and other advances in technology.

I had a 59 fastwin and the gear case was tight as a drum and the gear oil was never milky.

I'm probably mistaken but isn't your second picture the top vent hole for the gear casing oil? There should be 2 plugs with slots for big screw drivers. The bottom hole is where you squeeze the oil in and the top is just a vent to let the oil escape.

As stated above, check your gearcase oil before you do anything.

I just used the typical 80 or 90 wt gear oil. I probably used the evinrude brand but I don't remember.

yeah, that milky stuff is coming out ABOVE the gear oil case in one point, and that other place behind the prop.

Yes you are mistaken the oil level screw is above that, just below the anti-ventilation plate. You can see its location in the diagram in the parts catalog HERE See page 10

The oil drain/fill screw is just visible in the photo. The level screw is identical.

re the oil type, any high viscosity ( around SAE 80W90) outboard engine gear oil. I guess back in 1957 one would have used an automotive EP90 gear oil.

'just pulled gear oil plugs - no washers visable at quick glance but the oil is perfectly black with no water or "milky substance."

Should I just use thread-tape on the bolts and re-fill?

NO - you need to get the proper seals/washers from a Johnnyrude dealer. If oil looks ok, the washers are probably there but stuck in the holes. The seals should be replaced each time you change the oil.

The "Johnny rude" dealers in town suck. Any ideas were to obtain a new one. Surely the hardware store has washers.

Do I really have to use an OMC genuine part. Why won't a normal o-ring work? It's going to cost me $10 to ship an .89 cent part. Crazy.

The washers are nylon I believe. If you are sure you can match them with something suitable from the hardware store fair enough but don't come back crying if they let water into your gearcase.

Buy a pack of washers you'll need two every year and that'll spread the cost of shipping. Does not matter if the local dealer does suck. If he has the correct washers buy them.

A few models do use O rings but the screws then have a recess in the under side of the head for the O ring.
Use the correct type. Washer if the under side of the screw head is flat, O rings if there is a recess.

I would never use any seals other than the proper ones for the LU drain and vent. I recently bought a bag of a 100 sierra ones and might never to buy another one! As mentioned, buy a bunch, then you'll always have them and you wont skimp every season when you change the LU oil.

Let you into a tiny secret
I'm still using the original washers on an '84 engine. One always comes out with the screw, the other stays in the hole and I don't disturb either of them.
