1957 johnson 35 hp wont start

motor has plenty of spark it would backfire but not start i was told to check the head gasket did not look good so i replaced it now it will run for about 2 seconds and stall, but now i have gas leaking from the lower unit, is this a carborator problem?

Hi ya' deer....I meant that in a masculine way.... <br /><br />What's the carb look like? Does it still have the black gasket between the bowl and upper body? If it does, time for a carb overhaul. May still have the original cork float in it. How long have you had the engine?
