I was given grandpas outboard. Its a model number JW-13 and from what I have found is a 3 hp. The question is the fuel. It says to mix in 30w motor oil at 1/3 pint to a gallon. Moving ahead out of the stone age, is there a 2 stroke mix I can use in place of 30w?

Use any marine 2 stroke oil with a "TCW-3" rating at the manufacturers recomended ratio.
There are many synthetic oils available if You want to cut down on the smoke level.
That little Johnson is on My "I want someday" list.
Good Luck

Re: 1957 Johnson 3Hp

Thanks for the info. I mixed up a gallon and dumped it in. Mind you this engine was in the shop rafters and has not run since about 1969-70 so it been idle a bit. I choked it and pulled seven or 8 times and it fired. It stutters a bit here and there but still revs easy enough. Its amazing how quiet and smooth it is for such a old motor. The fact it fired at all is amazing and only goes to show they BUILT things back in the day. I roasted my merc the other day so I am hoping with a few maintenace parts on this little guy it can push my 14 footer around the lake. I would like to change the impellar at the least so if anyone has any tips on this it would help. I have little expirence working on out boards.

Best advice would be to read the faqs and the top secret files after my signature. Good threads on awakening a sleeping outboard, water pump overhaul, carb cleaning, etc..

Of course, come back whenever you need help. Good luck, nice motor.

Definately check out the "top secret file". Lots of good info there that helped me with a 56 Johnson. All the parts you may need to get her tuned up good is available right here on iboats. Ive checked just about every site that sells parts and this place has the best prices and ships very quick. NAPA also sells these parts. They have to be ordered from there as well. They were a bit more pricey even without paying shipping though. Good luck. Tune it up right and she should last for years!!

So I am curiose, are you running your 1956 motor on TCW-3? I have mine mixed at 50:1 so I hope that it is correct.

That motor should be run at 16:1 and no less. The instructions on the decals will specify 1/2 a pint per gallon. Hopefully, you haven't done any damage to it yet.
Those are great motors and it's no surprise that it fired up that quickly after sitting so long. That tells me that whoever put it away, did things right, before they did. I love it, when people leave gas in them, then when you pull it out 20 years later, it like lamp oil. It's a very safe bet, that the impeller is hardened up and broke into pieces, after you started it up. If you're lucky, not of the fragments didn't go up the water tube and clog it up.
It would be a good idea to go over this motor completely and give it a major tune up.

1.) Coils, wires, points and condensors.
2.) Carburetor rebuild. Make sure you get a new plastic float.
3.) Water pump impeller.
4.) New lower unit oil with new washers on both plugs.
5.) Possibly new lower unit seals. After you run it in a barrel, check the lower unit oil and make sure there is no water intrusion. It will look like milk shake, if water got in it.
