1957 Johnson Javelin 35 hp - control box, etc.

I finally got a carburator installed, and I couldn't get it into neutral to get it started. It started in the driveway with the garden hose, but not when I got it in the water! I took the control box apart, and the wire wasn't tightened with the set screw, so I did that and got forward, neutral and reverse. The throttle won't move into "fast" - the dial on the motor will only go to slow and start, very stiffly. Before I go poking around on the cables attached to the motor, does anyone have any advice? I'm so frustrated I could cry. I've had this beautiful boat and motor for 7 years, and have had so much work on the motor done. Some folks here will remember when I was looking for the carburator a few years ago! I sure could use some help. I'm not giving up.

Are you trying to move the throttle to the fast position while in neutral, some engines have an interlock that will stop you from advancing the throttle to the fast position while in neutral, you have to have it in gear to get to the fast position.

Ah ha! I'll head into the garage tomorrow and try that. I sure hope you're right. Thank you for the quick response!

You are a brilliant soul. Here it is: Throttle in Start: Neutral, Forward, NO REVERSE Throttle in Slow: Neutral, Forward, and Reverse
Throttle in Fast: Forward only, no neutral or reverse.

I'm so grateful for your help. I'd gotten a control box diagram through a link on another thread, which was tremendously helpful - now I know how it works! But it showed assembly of the controls with shift in neutral and throttle in fast; I interpreted that as how it was supposed be assembled so that's what I did.

You landed the plane on the rest of it, and again, I really appreciate the help.

Yikes, Chris. Pressssuuuurrre....My plan is to roll it out of the garage in the morning, and try to fire it up. Fingers crossed. I'll take a pic, but it won't be pretty.

No worries, they never start pretty :)

Once restored, they are beautiful. Unfortunately, can be quite expensive to restore. To get the chrome redone can cost much more than the original motor.

Here is the chrome from a Javelin I just did.

Yeah, I know I took some "liberties" with the restore, can anyone spot them?

That's just intimidating. I hope mine looks like that someday. First, get it running...then, make it pretty. You'll have to tell me how you did that.

I bought a very nice 1957 Golden Javelin in August. We love it. It's all original, but there was no prop. Who made the props that were originally furnished with this motor? And does anybody happen to know what size/pitch was installed as standard equipment? Or were these '57 motors sold originally without props?

Thanks for your help!

Originally a 10.5x13 by Michigan Wheel, part number 376917, superseeded to 384460

Really depends on the boat, and what you plan on using it for. You want your reccomended WOT RPM to fall within the reccomended range. With the '57 Javelin, that is about 4500 RPMS at WOT

Hi leslielbk. I'm way up north in Tallahassee :) I have a buddy who lives in Sarasota, so I pass through Bradenton from time to time and I've been looking at DO school (LECOM) there as well.

KFA4303 -
I'm looking for someone to paint this motor and get the chrome shiny. Do you know of anyone here in Florida who does this kind of thing? Thanks!
