BamaBuck, it looks close, but I will shamelessly say . . . . (EDIT: Shame on you, Robbie! Solicitation and promotion not allowed.)

It is hard to tell from the photo, but it look's right. The older model use's a 3 pawl, spring loaded pawl system, with a pawl stop ring bolted to the flywheel. The ring is bolted to the three holes that you use for the flywheel puller.

R.Johnson,

You said older models use a 3 pawl system.
How can I tell if it needs a three pawl or a single pawl?
The one that was on it was a single pawl(it broke). Just wandering if the pull starts are interchangable?

Hi Bama
I do not think the recoil starter you have pictured will work for your motor. You said the the one you have broke. Why not just repair the one you have? Most parts are still avilable for it. You can have parts welded, etc. Most of the time they are easier, faster and cheeper to repair.

Hey Bamabuckshot,
I've got a 54' 18hp fastwin rude with the pull start and I just got a 71-74 rude motor with the pull start that I plan on using as a back up. It does fit the older motor fine so I don't think you will run into a problem.

Hi Wizard1,
Your '54 cannot be an 18 - the 18 didn't debut until 1957.

ALL 18hp Johnrudes used the same recoil configuration - a single recoil pawl, nylon, engaging the outer rim of the flywheel. The eBay recoil will work, but will need the plastic boot removed from the rope guide area.
- Scott

Ooops, my bad
Your right Chinewalker, I was wrong, it is a 57. I looked up the information I have that I found on here last year.
