Welcome to iboats.com.

The best manual is the factory manual, but those are hard to find. Try ebay as a potential source.
The Clymer and Seloc manuals have thier different strong/weak points, but are adequate in general.

I would check the compression, and if the compression is up to spec, I would just fix what may be broken fron sitting (rebuild carbs, impeller, l/u seals ect).

The best place to start for any old Merc enthusiast is www.oldmercs.com . They've got manuals, parts lists, etc.

Your Mark 55 is one of the best motors ever built - kinda the small-block Chevy of the outboard world. It's basic design was built for a generation and then some. Lots of parts available and lots of helpful people who share your interest. For getting in touch with them, try www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/mercboard/index.htm..
- Scott

Re: 1957 merc 55 thunderbolt outboard motor

i really appreciate your input. the motor came attached to a 1960 Larsen Playboy speedboat that my wife found in a salvage yard in fort collins, co. i'm from a long line of whalers from new bedford, mass, and have deep roots to the sea. i will give this boat & motor the justice they deserve. many thanks!
