You have the shift rod properly seated in the coupler?

Hi Frank 27. I have a '61 QD-22, which is virtually identical to your motor. I agree with High Trim. Are you sure the shift rod is properly seated in its connector? They can be notoriously tricky and seem like they're seated properly when they are not. It's quite common. They fact that you can get in to FWD, but not REV is also a classic sign of a poorly seated shift rod. Did you actually take the skeg off and inspect the gears when you took the LU off? If so, perhaps the phillips head, shift rod pivot screw is not installed properly. Again, a fairly common problem. Thankfully, these little motors are so simple there are only a few things it can be. Assuming the flywheel rotates and the prop can spin in either direction when in neutral, then it must be something invloving the shift rod. A few pics may help too. Keep us posted.

If the shift rod is pushed too far into the coupler, that could keep it from engaging reverse. The recess in the top of the shift rod should appear in the bolt hole in the coupler. Then the coupler bolt will go through easily. If you push the shift rod too far up into the coupler, the bolt will go in with difficulty and you'll strip the threads on the coupler bolt. In this case, the rod will be too high to fully engage reverse. Are you confused now?!!
