Hello all,
I just got a 58 Evinrude from a friend. Motor will run, but gas leaks from the carb and adjustments vibrate loose. I am planning on rebuilding the carb with a kit, and replacing the points, condensors, and coils if necessary.
My question is there any typical problems with this model engine, what sould the fuel ratio be, and any other suggestions to get it up and running.
Thanks in advance.

Howdy, BW.

You don't say what model your 'Rude is. It would help to know. Many of those older engines are misidentified. Look at the plate on the mounting clamp.

If it is really a '58, your fuel mix is 24:1, 1 Qt TCW-3 rated outboard oil to 6 gallons of unleaded regular.

Good luck. :)

Hi jb,
The #'s I found are:10016-10555
Does this sound correct? I got them off of thr plate attached on the drive housing just below the mounting plate.

Welcome BW,

Factory fuel mix recommendation is 24:1. The carb kit should solve your gas leak & adjustment problems. The leaking gas is probably a bad float & the adjustments are held by the needle packings. I would change the water pump impeller while you are at it. The electrical stuff on your engine may be okay. If it were mine I would start with the carb & impeller & changing the lower unit gear lube. A manual will help alot alot! These were good engines.

Re: 1958 10 hp Evinrude

The only real weak spot on those 10s is the lower unit. Beginning in 1958, OMC "cheapened" the 10hp by doing away with the 15/18hp based lower unit, and adapting a 5.5/7.5 lower unit. The gears are a little beefed up, and the driveshaft is a little heavier, but it wasn't a perfect solution. They work alright, but they won't take a whole lot of abuse. Make sure you shift at low idle, make sure there's no water getting into the gearcase oil, and (obviously) avoid contact with the river bottom. The big killer is the water in the gearcase. If the oil starts turning milky, it's time to replace all the seals - especially the shift shaft seal...
- Scott

BW--I have a '56 Rude 10 hp, model 10012. The above info regarding fuel mixture, etc is exactly what you need. FYI, I just received an original owners manual for my model from www.kencook.com. Scott's remark about the lower unit is interesting; the '56 has a very strong lower unit, and the fact that is from a bigger motor models explains why the lower unit on my motor is so formidable. This motor is extremely strong--it gives me more than twice the speed of my 7.5, but of course the 10 hp has the three bladed prop. The owner's manual mentions that this engine is "Amply powered for water skiing, capable of skimming boatloads of passengers across the water..." which may be a bit of a stretch, but says something about it's strong willed performance. Mine runs flawlessly, but gobbles up the fuel and oil.
