I have a 1958 Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman. I don't use the motor much and a young fella offered me a few dollars as he wants it for his 12 ft boat. Before I let it go I decided to give it a once over and replace the impeller as I've had one sitting around here for awhile.
I started it up in a tub and it purred real nice as it usually does. I ran it through the gears and it seemed to shift harder than usual. I let it cool down then I pulled the power head and then the lower unit. I discovered a milky, foamy substance around the water pump and the shift shaft. Checked the lower unit oil and sure enough, milkshake.
Found the seal kit here on IBOATS but I'm looking to replace the gasket / seal that sits on top of the drive shaft plate. ( think that's what it's called?) Can't seem to locate it in any parts diagram?
Also, any special tips for installing the seal kit on this engine. And anything else that should be looked at while apart? If I end up letting it go I want the kid to enjoy it for awhile. He knows that it's an old motor and won't last forever.
Since I've had it I've replaced the points and condensers, replaced the coils, plugs, converted it to run on a single fuel line.
Anyways here are a few pictures if you can help identify the seal / gasket and give me any tips for installing the kit I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
