Just wondering how difficult would it be to repair a 1958 7.5 evinrude with a manual. the lower unit is getting water in the oil and i already replaced the gaskets on the fill and drain holes, but it didnt help. are those gaskets suposed to be hard plastic because that is what they sold me? ive never really worked on an outboard before but im some what mechanicaly inclined or should i just put it to rest and buy a new one. Last year i had a new water pump installed and the motor runs pretty good. Any advice would be appeciated.

it should not a hard job to do, though you may need to make a tool or two, (I haven't done that one before) replace the bearings also, when I HAD the unit from my 50 hp done it passed the test and still leaked, changed the bearings that HE failed to replace and the leak stopped. Lots of good info here, some will want the model number of your engine.

Hi SteelieBug,
Not a big job to replace the seals in that unit. The kit is availablr through a number of sources, including (I believe) I-boats, Sierra/Napa part #18-2679.
Replace the waterpump impeller while you're in there - cheap insurance!
- Scott
