I need to replace the water pump in a 1958 7.5 Johnson. Doesn't that lower just drop off when you take those 4 bolts off? This one comes down about an inch and stops and seems hung up on something and I do not want to force it off. Do I need to take the power head off to replace this pump?

Thanks,
Gary

Yes you do. There are two nuts and a star washer between them on top of the shift rod underneath the power head on that motor I believe. Since you already removed the four screws from the LU, put a few back in so the lower unit will not just drop off onto the floor when you remove the two nuts from the shift rod.

To remove the power head, first remove the fuel rod bracket (Not sure of the actual name of this bracket) and the fuel line. May as well cut the fuel lines & replace them, it's easier and they are probably no good now anyway, and remove (7) screws holding power head in place from bottom of motor housing below the power head. Hope this helps you out.
