My friend has a 1958 Elgin 12hp motor. We're not sure what the name or part# of the thing that broke is, but am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.
It is the little plastic gear that is on top of the little shaft that grabs and spins the motor when you pull start it.

There were no part numbers on it at all...what is it called so I can at least do some phone/internet shopping for a replacement??

Thanks,
Steve

That is the starter pinion gear.
Youll probably have to find it used.
Your motor was built by West Bend
Sears model number 571.5896 West Bend 1280.
You could try Laings outboards for parts.
www.laingsoutboards.com. or www.tcoutboard.com,
also watch ebay for parts and parts motors.
