Hello all,

I’ve got a ‘58 lightwin project I’ve been working on for a little over a year. Got it running last spring and for the most part it’s been a great little motor. This past weekend I had it out for a local fishing trip. The water is dark, muddy and can be hazardous at times with sudden depth changes and stumps. I did make contact on a couple of them and dismissed it as there were no immediate damage to the motor. While heading back the engine started to rev like it was in neutral. I shut it off and paddled the rest of the way back and could hear the prop free spinning in the water.

Yesterday I opened up the oil plugs. Judging by the oil it seems like I have a bad seal somewhere. Could anyone point me in the right direction (part numbers and whatnot) for a lower unit seal kit? I’ll be taking the lower unit apart to inspect for damage hopefully within the next few days. Are there any write ups I can follow for proper disassembly/assembly? I’m a novice in the hobby.

That, folks, is why it is supposed to have a stainless steel drive pin. The rubber clutch ring is supposed to slip before it shears the pin.

Ok, having said that, the rubber ring may be hardened with age and won't slip as it is supposed to. And yes it is possible to shear the stainless drive pin if you clobber something totally badly.
