I have been restoring a 1958 Fisherman 5.5 and now am putting it back together. Had to pull the powerhead to replace the impeller and have a question regarding the TOP of the drive shaft that goes into the power head---- there is a brass washer that is the first thing that goes on top of the driveshaft, then a spring, then a black rubber thing about an inch long, then an o-ring, then a metal washer, then a gasket. SO, the brass washer that goes on the shaft first is flat on one side and concave on the other. Which way is it supposed to go on the driveshaft? Flat side down or concave side down? The spring does not fit inside the concave side of the brass washer . Any help appreciated....

There is a small pin in the driveshaft it drives the seal assembly.---First part that goes on is the washer with the 2 bumps down and concave part up.-----Next is the spring.---The spring fits into the cupped washer.-----Then the carbon seal goes on with the o-ring on top of it.---Next is the stator for the carbon seal with the flat side down.--Then the cork gasket.----That is the way it goes.---If not then you may have some spurious parts !!.

No Title

racerone got it right--(as always). The spring is supposed to fit into the brass retainer washer.
