Im tryin to put a new impeller in it, but when I take the 4 or 5 bolts off the lower end, and try to put it off, it only comes down about 1 inch, and thats only because its pulling on the gear shift shaft and pulling the shifter into reverse position. I thought both shafts just slide into the female-ends of the crank and shifter.

I can see the impeller housing, but cant get at it.

Am I missing something else that needs to be disconnected? I didnt think you had to come at this from the top of the motor at all. Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Not to worry. There are several folks here that can help you. I'm not familiar with your motor but, I haven't heard of any that don't require disconnecting the shift lever to drop the lower unit.

The powerhead has to be removed in order to disconnect the shift rod at the top end (two nuts). There is no other way. When you do get the powerhead off you will find a carbon seal assembly at the top or the drive shaft. That seal is vitally important. Pay attention to how it goes. Replace the rubberized cork gasket on it and the o-ring inside. You will also need a new powerhead gasket.
