Good afternoon, I hope you are all well. I am resealing my gearcase and I've hit a roadblock. I purchased the Sierra 18-2684 gear housing seal kit and the oil seal does not fit over the step up in the prop shaft. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if they packaged the wrong seal in the kit or I ordered the wrong kit. I did a Google search and this was the kit that I found.

It takes some effort to push the seal over that step.-----Can you post the OD of the housing , diameter of the shaft and ID of the seal ?----Are you sure your lower unit is an original 58 vintage ?

As you can see the metal opening on the seal is the same size as the shaft prior to the step up

It's hard to say. That seal is supposed to just barely clear the shaft. That's to keep monofilament fishline out of the seal. Now the question is which is at fault, the seal or the shaft? That seal feature was introduced after 1958, but is supposed to fit. I suppose there could be a burr on the shaft, or the shaft could be a few thou's oversize. More likely the seal is not to spec, size-wise. Did somebody say "Sierra"?

It is a Sierra, found it on Amazon. The seal is .625. My shaft is .667 where it steps up

There's something strange going on here. I have a prop shaft assy of unknown year and gearcase bearing assy right in front of me. The seal rides on the 5/8" diameter on the shaft, NOT up on the step. The bearing rides on the step, but not the seal. Do you have a shaft that is different than mine?

EDIT: I just looked at your pictures again. The pictures show the bearing assy slid on the shaft backwards. Turn it around and report back.
