Hello all,I just aquired a 1958 jw-14 for a pretty good price, free. It does run for a short time on the upper cylinder,no spark on lower. On investigation,it looks like the coils, and spark plug wires have been replaced. Someone took the points, and the cam lobe out, and threw them away. They put in these things called an Atom. Little red thingees. I tested the coils and they ohm out the same for both primary and secondary so I think the coils may be good. But I have no way of testing these Atom thingees. I have done nothing to this engine but put gas in it so far.I can buy a new lobe for it part# 0510167, and new points, and condensers to bring it back to original.I know that I need to rebuild the carb also. For the short time that it does run, it pumps water, but a new impeller kit would be on the list .I don't know how long this thing has been sitting, but my guess is atleast 30 years.I guess my question is, do you guys think this motor is worth restoring? I know nothing about this model.I have a little 6' dingy that I think it would work on.I know this is a tough question. It's more like what's it worth to me.It's just maybe a 100 bucks,if that, and my time to get it going, but do you think once I do that, it will be a nice little motor? Are there any problems with these motors that I should be aware of, and not waste my time, and money on? My wife says it's cute as a bug, whatever that's worth. Thanks for any help.

Tough question?? Not at all. The JWs and descendants were the sweetest little outboards ever made. If you don't want her send her to me or give her to someone who will treat her like the treasure she is.

Really curious about the little red thingies. Got pix?

The picture posted above looks exactly like what's on my motor.I haven't a clue how to test them. One is obviously ok because the top cylinder does fire, the lower has no spark.I think maybe I should go back to points. What do you think?

Well JB, I guess you convinced me to go ahead a dump a little time and money in her. That's kinda what I wanted to hear. The paint and decals are what I would call 90% for a motor of that age. It looks to me that the motor was used ,but not abused too badly.Thanks.
