This is my first outboard, so I am very new to this. i have a 1959 10hp sportwin. I tried the search, but I don't know what to search for. Here is my problem. I turn the handle to start and the engine starts. When I turn it towards the shift location, the engine stalls. I tried adjusting the slow speed setting with no results. I replaced the coils because they were cracked and shorting out. Did i mess up some sort of timing or something. The engine seems to rev pretty good in a barrel of water. Please excuse my lack of correct terminology.

If turning the low speed needle all the way closed does nothing, then your carb needs cleaning or you have an air leak.
However, the start, shift, slow stuff on the throttle grip is pretty much useless. I totally ignore them because I have several 50's OMC motors that run great and few of them will stay running in the slow position or start with the throttle in the start position.
good luck,

the air leak could be in the intake manifold, carb body, adjustment needle packing, carb to intake mount, etc. However, if you haven't rebuilt the carb, you should. It's not hard, and there are excellent instructions for cleaning, and making the adjustments in the "top secret files" thread at the top of this forum. I don't have a lot of motors with vacuum leaks. Usually it's a carb problem.
I believe there may be a "stop" on the adjustment linkage for the low speed needle on your motor. You might try taking off the knob and adjusting the needle by hand and if you get it right, then replace the knob. Once again, Joe Reeves has placed an excellent explanation in the aforementioned top secret file. You should peruse it.
Good luck,

Same here, mine is like that too,
too much slop in the linkages probably.
