Hi all, I have recently purchased a boat with a 1959 35hp johnson I ran it for a bit and it began to smoke pretty bad and run rough. So I ran a compression test on it, the pressures were both around 120 psi. So I put new coils, wires, points, and plugs in and still the same results. It also seems like the water gets pretty hot in just a few seconds of just idling. Has anyone encountered this before? I'll appreciate any help.

Thanks:D

What gas/oil ratio are you running? Have you checked the water pump...is it spitting a good stream of water out of the tell-tale hole? Don't run it until you check/resolve the heat problem.

its going to appear to smoke pretty bad if you are running it at its recomended oil to gas ratio (24:1). definately change the water pump and check the thermostat, its under the cover on the rear and top of the head, it has three screws or bolts in it
good luck and let us know what ya find:)

Are you running it in a barrel? If so, it'll smoke pretty badly as the smoke is concentrated. Plus, the motor will suck in its own exhaust in a confined space like that and cause it to run rough...

I am running it in a barrel now but when it started running rough i was on the lake. My fuel/oil ratio is at 24:1 an i have got a good stream of water comming out. I also thought thermostat so i pulled the thermostat cover and found that the is no thermostat:eek: so I have ordered a stat but still this shouldn t make it run the way it is running. Thanks for the quick reply.

I also pulled the side covers so I could inspect the rods, pistons, and rings. It all looks good and clean I' ll try and take a pic and put it up.
