Hi all,

First thank you all for the help and the great advice so far with my 1959 35hp Johnson motor so far! Was going to fire it up yesterday but got sidetracked down to pops house to help him out with a few projects (mainly doing some work on some of his Model T's) so first fire up will be today. My question this time is the engine covor from the 59 35hp the same as one from a early to mid 60's 40 hp the same? My 35 hp is missing something on the rear of it and shows two big holes but a friend has a early to mid 60's 40 hp cover I can have but don't want to waste the money on sending it or driving 200 miles each way to get it if it isn't the same. Thanks for any help and my next projects after getting the Johnson running good including complete tuneup and waterpump is going to be fixxing a siezed 15 hp Mariner and then try to find a decent restorable hull for and original mid 20's Model T marine engine but that's a next winter project. Thanks again !

They are functionally similar, using the same base pattern. 1950s cowls latched in front with a spring-steel clip in the front. 1960s cowls latched with a rotating lever. Not sure you can mix/match without swapping other parts...

Latches are different. You would have to swap the lower covers as well.
