I tried starting my old rude today, it fired and tries to run, but will not sustain. There is a diaphram looking thing on the side of the motor with wires going to it, one wire goes to a button on the front of the motor. I push the button, nothing happens. Is it a primer button? What is the electric Diaphram for? Help please. Were should I start with on the low and high idle mixture adjustments for starting, how much throttle ect... Thanks in advance for any info.

The thing you are looking at is the vacuum cut-out switch. It prevents a "run-away" condition where the motor revs up in neutral and won't slow down. And believe me, it will do that without the switch.

I assume the button you are talking about is the stop button for killing the motor.

High speed needle 3/4 turn open, slow 1 1/2 turns open. That will get it running but it will be too rich and will need to be adjusted from there. Put the shift in neutral and open the throttle as far as it will go (in neutral). It should only go part way. That is the start position.

Have you checked the coils? Unless they have already been replaced, they need to be. Dang, I'm getting tired of typing that statement! Anyway, that would be why it won't run.

Re: 1959 big twin 35 rude FIRED!

F-R gave 'ya some good advice---I just replaced 2 coils on a used '58 evinrude 18hp with 2 used ones off my old 7.5hp evinrude that worked fine at the time but just for security, I replaced them with new. The 18hp wouldn't run right and I couldn't understand why. I did figure out that someone had badly misadjusted the float in the carb and thought that would fix it but to my dismay---it didn't. It stopped it from flooding but still ran crappy and wouldn't hit wide open--sounding like it was hitting on one cyllinder. I just couldn't believe it was the coils because they looked great and both of 'em would shock the heck out of ya'. I finally resorted to changing them with a set off my '57 johnson and ---yep, it fixed it. Cleaning your carb is no big deal either. BTW, you can get some new coils for about $15 a piece, and have that problem eliminated and even if you still have to clean the carb, you won't have to worry about the coils.
Hope you get it running,
JBJ

Re: 1959 big twin 35 rude FIRED!

Thanks for the info. Is there any good places on the web to get parts for the old machines, or would a local boat dealer actually be able to get the parts? Does any body know where I can get the general specs for evinrude motors? Such as weight, shaft length, timing, spark plugs ect... I have a 73 rude 50, I want to see how that old 35 compares to it as far as dimensions and weight. I think the 35 is actually heavier than my 50, but not sure. Thanks again.

I read on an earlier post that Ken Cook outboards (look it up on your search engine) has all the manuals you'll need. You can get your parts right here on iboats or many others, but a manual will be very helpful 'cause a lot of times you'll need a part # for motors this old to get the online websites to work for you and the manual will have all your part #'s in it. Your local dealer will have access to 'em, too, but I like to get mine online without ever leaving home (more time to go run the lake).
Let us know how she runs,
JBJ:)

The 50 is heavier due to the more massive lower end, but size is not much different is it?

imho, if you do the coils, do all of it and be done, coils, point, condenser, plug wires.

Cleaned the carb up a little, hit the starter, runs like a kitten! Sounds like it has a lot of power for a old motor. Gonna test it on the lake soon, to see how it does under a load. Thanks for all the info. Probably gonna put a tattle tale on it. Seen a sticky on this sit how to do it, probably be worth it. Thanks again for all the help.:D
