I have a 1959 rude big twin 35hp. I aquired this motor from a good friend, I have no paper work on the motor. Does anybody know where, I could get repair diagrams, owners manual ect... Tried the evinrude site, expensive, cost more than I paid for the motor. Has good compression, want to make it run! Thanks

i have the 58 35. check compression to make sure you have a good base. 99% you will need to change the coils, points, condensers, plug wires, carb kit. 100% change the water pump. $150-200 you will need the 2 line pressure tank, or do the fuel pump conversion as i did. what ebay for the johnson/evinrude 10th edition service manual. found on recently for around $10.00 don't know if it is gone or not. you will need a harmonic balancer puller #8 hardened 14x20 bolts to pull the flywheel. if you coil look like these they are toast and must be replaced.

Everything tashasdaddy said, except I believe the '59 Big Twin already has the fuel pump and single hose tank. 'Zat right?

It alread has single fuel hose and pump. He says he had it on the lake 2 years ago and it ran fine. Is there a way to check the water pump, does this old motor have a tattle tail? What mix do I use, I've searched the forums seen 24:1, 40:1 50:1, which is it? I wanna fire her up and see how she does!

the only real way to test the water pump is to fire it up and keep track of the temp, it the top of the cylinder head gets so hot you can't hold you hand on it for 4-5 seconds shut it down. the leg has to be atleast 1/2 submerged as the wp is high in the leg. no tale tell. slight mist out the exhaust relief on back of leg, no mist no cool. 24/1 is fuel mix up to 1963.

Change the water pump impeller anyway. Its cheap insurance at $20. However, I'd check the compression and coils before I did anything.

Good evenin'

My brother has a 57 35 hp Javelin that looked like it needed to go to the scrap yard. We did the usual coil/wire/point/etc. ,water pump impeller, carb kit after checking the usual on the compression/fire. That was in '96. Still running the Tn. River EVERY summer. Good motors. Not to be afraid of unless you see evidence of a drive-by!

max at duckworks says to use a 175deg thermomelt candle. do you consider that a legitimate test? IOW, if it melts the candle, it's too hot?

They are discoloured, which indicates that those particular coils are shot. Sometimes they are cracked and/or sweaty looking. They will always fail even if they pass the spark test.

Here are a couple more bad coils. Note they are both discoloured and cracked. 100% bad. Non-repairable.
