I am new to outboards, but I have decent mechanical skills on autos. I have acquired an old 59 Gale 5hp. The motor supposedly was running good when it was retired, but when i got it she was locked up. I got it to break loose after soaking it with mystery oil for several months. I changed the impeller, carb float, fuel lines, and spark plugs. What else do I need to replace before attempting to crank? I need to know what fuel mixture do you burn in one of these motors? What weight oil does the lower unit take? How do the mixture knobs work? Any help will be greatly appreciated

Do you have the gearshift model or the start-and-go model? Either way, you didn't mention the coils. If they are the original, they are almost certainly cracked. That would have been the first thing I would have looked at.

The gearshift lower takes 80-90 weight outboard gear oil. The non-shift unit takes Lubriplate #105 grease.
