Hello to all. I found IMO a very unique boat that I am going to
Try to restore. I am adequately knowledgeable with mechanical
Devices (motors, electrical, ETC), but I am by no means a Master Mechanic.
You all have really become my friends in here. I do not post very
much but I read this site religiously. You have given me the courage and your
Knowledge to do this myself.

I have been playing on Craigslist and I have ended up with
Two old boats. (All I had to do was pull them out of their
Respective fields or should I say graves) I spent almost no money
on them them just a little gas to go get them. One looks to be a 1959 Reinel. It is a fiberglass boat with a cabin. About 17 foot long. The floor has very much rot.
The other boat I ended up with is a 1959 Glasscat Catamaran. Also
About 18 foot with a cabin.
Both are in rough shape but the cat is much better structurally.
I personally like the cat better also. I am going to strip the ?old
Style? fittings from the Reinel and place them on the Cat.
The reinel has a big old Evenrude OB Which I am going to
Remove?and hopefully restore and put on the cat. It has four cylinders
And about 75 hp. I took the cover off the motor and it looks
ok for it?s age. It has an electric starter but there is a pull start
on top of the motor also. I tried to pull the pull start and it would
not budge. I did not want to damage anything so I have not
bothered with it much. I think it can be saved. I am waiting until
I can build a motor stand and order a manual and take it apart correctly
(with occasional help from you all).

Sorry for the long introduction I know some people on this site want
our questions quickly with very little background info.

My fist Questions When I removed the cover from the motor
These were the model and serial numbers. 505220 and 01554
Does any body know what year this is and what the motor is called?
I think it said power flight or something on the cover. I am not sure.

Also Does any body know anything about the 1959 Glasscat? I can
Not find anything about it on the net. Does anybody know where I
Can find photos of it so I can see what it should look like originally.
Anybody know about the company that made it?

Does anybody know how to clean a fuel tank? When I opened the tank it
had a very strong smell. Varnish?

Lastly I tried to look in the FAQ Section but It appears to be a bad
Link. Can anybody tell me how to post photos onto this site? So I
can show things instead of trying to describe them.

Thanks again and so sorry for the long dissertation.

Based on the numbers you provided I believe your motor is a 1960 Evinrude Starflite

All of my friends said I was crazy for cleaning my Old metal gas tanks but I like to keep everything original when and where I can so this is what I Did. I Took the float and all the other part off the tank put sprayed a half a can of carb cleaner in it, a quart of diesel, and then put about two quarts of nuts and bolt inside and then duct taped all the holes shut. I then jacked up my riding lawn mower rear end, bungee corded the tank to the rear tire and put the mower in gear. The tank spun around with the nuts and bolt inside for about an hour and voila' I had two clean tanks. I then had them powder coated for $10 bucks each and they are as good as new. I even found a website that sells the old evinrude cruis-a-day decals for em. You may not be as crazy as me.

Re: 1959 GlassCat Catamaran Questions

Thank you all for your Information. I am going to try the trick
with the lawn mower. It sounds like something I would do?..

Hey Woodonglass, That photo you dug up of the Glasscat is a photo
of my Actual boat?.Small world Huh.
It was placed on CL where you
Probably got the photo from the guy I got it from.

Anyways?I am going to find the posts you suggested Bond-O.
Thank you.

Looking at my little blue boat what do you folks think? I ended up
Trading him for a little old Seaswril Tri-Hull and and a little
Mercury 7.5 Motor about early 60?s Era. Not bad huh?

Once I learn how to post photos I will post more pictures.
Thanks again.
Thanks to you also woosterken. is the Power cat and glass cat same
company?

Re: 1959 GlassCat Catamaran Questions

Dave,
Here's what I did to clean my tanks. I took the float etc.. off like Wood did on his. Poured out the varnish. Then I bought some Sea Foam from Wally World and poured about a third of the can in each tank. I have three tanks. Then put about 2 gal each of fresh gas in them. I had an old safety chain for the trailer and put that in the tank and shook it up for a while. Did that in each tank. I put the floats back in so the hole was closed and then let them sit for a about five days. Two tanks came out great, the third was really bad so I pumped out the other two tanks into the third and let it sit for a couple of days on each side of the tank, ends also. That did the trick, the Sea Foam ate up all the old varnish and crap and cleaned it right up with very little work on my part. The tanks are working great now.

60Clipper, when you say you shook it up how long did you rattle the chain?
I think wood said that he shook his tanks for over an hour.
Thanks

Re: 1959 GlassCat Catamaran Questions

Dave,
About 5 to 10 minutes at the most. The one that was real bad I didn't really shake any longer than the rest, I just let it "soak" alot longer than the others.

Re: 1959 GlassCat Catamaran Questions

Thanks again Bob,
The tank is going to be what I work on this weekend. The tank is aprox 10 or 15 gal. It looks to me to be Aluminum (spelled incorrectly I am sure) or did they make tanks in stainless? This tank I removed from I believe a Late 50's Rienel. It has at the top a pipe nipple to which the fill cap is attached and when I put a pipe wrench to it I peeked inside. it Has very sludgy varnish and a lot of smell. I did not see
a lot of rust or really a lot hard varnish (or whatever it is called). the fuel
still seems to be mostly liquid. The tank is very shiny for a 50 something
year old boat.

I already bought the seafoam from.... you guessed it Wal Mart!
I am a truck driver by trade. I used to haul fuel products. We always used
diesel to "clean" our tanks after a "dirty" load. Should I use Gas or diesel
with the SeaFoam?
As always, I am very grateful for all of the help, you Bob and everybody
on this site provides.
Thanks again,
Dave

Re: 1959 GlassCat Catamaran Questions

Dave,
no problem, my pleasure, thats what we're here for. As far as gas or diesel I used regular unleaded gas, it was cheaper. You can use diesel if you like, the Sea Foam doesn't care.
