I have what I believe is a 1959 Evinrude Sportwin 10 HP (Model/SN 10018-05039). Could anyone confirm the year based on the SN I provided? I was told by a mechanic at a marina to use a premium 2 stroke engine (TC-W3) oil and mix 50:1, but I see everyone here is recommending 24:1. Has the oil improved such that I can run 50:1 or should I stick with 24:1?

Thanks GA Boater and AlTn. I reviewed the tips and will follow from now on. I have this motor running here recently after sitting since 1992 after replacing several parts. If I can get a few fixes completed on my vintage 1957 Cadillac Catalina, I hope to get it out on the water this weekend.

It'll run fine on regular unleaded, but it will run better and last longer on non-ethanol fuel, if you can get your hands on some. If you end up using Gasohol, be sure to use a marine-grade fuel stabilizer such as Stabil with each tank. It should help cut down on the nasty effects of the Corn-Squeezin's!

Cheers.........ed

Well I finally got it in the water. It took 10 pulls (was getting kind of worried) and it fired up. It ran well at speeds above idle to full throttle. Nothing like the smell of a 2 stroke in the morning on a calm lake. I put a new float and carb. kit in it and set the jets to factory. I could get it to run a little better when I used the low speed knob and set it to rich at trolling speeds but eventually it would sputter or sneeze a few times and stall. Any suggestions? I recall it doing this as a kid when my dad took me fishing with this same boat/motor, but I also remember it trolling like a champ without the sneezing.

Open the low speed needle to get rid of the sneeze.--Do you know if this motor has had new coils installed ?---Might be worth having a look through the inspection hole in the flywheel.

Yes, new coils and points were replaced with the float and carb. kit prior to putting her in the water. It has new fuel lines as well as the seals that go to the tank fitting. I see the manual calls out for a Champion J4J (0.030" gap) and from previous posts that a Champion J4C is pretty much a drop in replacement. I heard guys running a J6C with 0.030" gap for trolling but not much high speed operation due to hotter temp range and a J4C gapped at 0.040" to help with trolling but will also give good high speed performance. Any suggestions/recommendations here would be helpful.
