Chewed up teeth on the flywheel. Numbers cast and stamped into the back of it shows it to be a late 60s to mid 70s manual transmission 157 tooth. These are fairly common but if I search for a Mercruiser one for my year/motor I get NLA or $$$.

Is this flywheel right or did the Mercruiser one get swapped for a FoMoCo one somewhere along the way?

The ring gear is replaceable. NAPA stocks them. With a brass drift and a suitable hammer the old one is easy to drive off. Heat the new one and just drop it on the flywheel, once cooled re mount it.

Did mine a couple of years ago. Left flywheel in freezer overnight and heated ring gear in oven at 500 degrees for an hour. Ring gear literally fell on to flywheel.

Wow, that was easy. Left the flywheel outside over night and did the oven but I only did 450* (wife was not happy) Thanks!
NAPA stocks the ring gear for $39.

So a bit off the original topic but I have read that the flywheel is a 28oz imbalanced type and I can see the extra weight on it but what I have not figured out is how to determine the right orientation when putting it back on. I did not know this before removal and did not mark it.

the pattern is not symetrical, 1 or two bolts are off so the flywheel can only go on one way. additionally there are witness marks on the mounting face of the flywheel from the crank.

yes they are just slightly off, i usually mark the FW and crank with paint marker so as i can just put the FW strait on.
but since you don't have that luxury :) ,a smear of grease on the end of the crank will make it easy to spin the FW to align the bolt holes correctly

Yep, did not know that there was a need to mark it. Was pretty frustrated at that point just trying to get the 6 nuts off. Did not have/could not find a 6 point box wrench to get in behind the coupler to get them off and my 12 point was chewing them up. New ones on the way!!
Now need to figure out how to torque them back on. I am sure that there is a tool to do it but I just have a 1/2 socket torque wrench.
