1960’s 16’ Aluminum V-hull Mystery Boat Build
I just bought a 16’ (15’ 8”) aluminum V hull with a 1965 Johnson 33 on the transom.

I’ve already torn out the old floor and seats and am planning on putting a new floor in, time will tell whether I shell out the money for an aluminum floor or if I end up going with treated plywood like I usually do.

there’s no I’d tag on the hull and I am trying to find a manufacturer of it so I can have an idea of what it was just for curiosity's sake. It has a textured side rail, gunwales and sides of the hull and used to have that same across the front where there was a bow cap similar to an old Lonestar or Starcraft. But this texturing is throwing me off it’s like what’s on a fishing net handle on an aluminum pole if I had to describe it. Like knurling but on the entire boat except for the bottom of the hull and the transom. This thing is built beefy with 2” square tubing ribs every foot on the hull. It should make for a good fishing rig when I ditch the old cable steer and put a good floor in it.

I’ll try and throw up some pictures here soon.

if anybody can help ID the boat that would be great!

The hull shape is a little odd almost like a riverboat or a canal boat in a sort of way.

I realize that is the general consensus, but actually Starcraft DOES use treated plywood for their decks. Maybe that's why they are able to warrant the wood for life.

Maybe someone should find out exactly what treatment they use since there must be some chemistry that is compatible with aluminum.

I think if you go to the Starcraft site they say what they use. It isn't the soaking wet stuff from a Big Box store and not as cheap, I'm sure.

IIRC it is also used on new pontoon boat decks

Its not the typical PT wood sold at big box stores, which most would have access too.

Micronized is another variant of PT thats supposed to be aluminum safe, but again not typically found in big box stores.

Of course there have been several
Help, something's corroding my boat
topics posted over the years, of brand new to 5yr old boats. 1 might have been electricity bleeding out of the marina slip. At least 1 presented like the wrong PT lumber had been used at the factory and the chemicals leached into the bilge and corroded multiple areas and seams.

Another ended up in a fight w the dealer and Starcraft over warranty repairs, which would have had to include replacement of the entire transom skin. IIRC, it was a less then 9mo old boat.

So, yep, blanket statement/advice
Dont use PT on an aluminum boat

Supposed safe PT can be found online, but many would balk at just the price before shipping, w shipping, most definitely wouldnt.... so again, see above quote

I'm aware of the concern for PT on an aluminum boat. However I've never noticed anything on the several decks I've built, and if there is anything I would be surprised if it's more than a very very small amount of noticeable corrosion. Thanks Though

Then you haven't looked. Big Box PT is loaded with copper and the damage is small at the beginning. It starts as pits and progresses to pin holes to finally larger holes.

There are many alternative wood choices that are copper-free and safe for AL boats.

I am as well from the school of using proper Marine plywood of no less than 5/8" thick for the floor. I have never heard of using Aluminum for flooring. I would think it would have to be of a heavy gauge to prevent floor deflection at even at 12" centre like you have there anyone jumping off the gunnel into the boat right between the cross members it's going to leave a dent. And you know some newbie is going to jump into the boat rather than step into it. The 1st thing I do when I have new mate is to show them how to get in and out of my boat.

Sorry can't help ID ing your boat without pics. Pics please after you have enough posts here.
