Hello, I just bought this engine in non working condition. It is a 1960 with a 64 power head. I have compression of about 115 in both. I have spark and I have fuel but can not get it to start. Also there was a shut of switch that has been removed. Could the lack of a kill switch make a difference. my carb needs some pieces yet but even dumping a little fuel inside won't start it. Help Please. and thank you in advance.

Well, your compression is excellent. That won't be an issue. I would check over your ignition system and make sure everything looks good. The coils on these motors tend to get cracked insulation and then they arc out on the mag plate. It's a very common thing. On your motor, you can remove the hand starter assembly by three screws and on top of the flywheel, there should be a thin aluminum plate held down by some 7/16" bolts or slot head screws. Once you remove this little plate, you should then be able to turn the flywheel by hand (clockwise only) and get a visual of the coils. Your points may also need to be cleaned as well.

This is a good place to start. Let us know what you find:cool:

Thank you I will check now. I found that the plugs in the motor were wrong so I went to autozone and they sold me 2 champion cj8,j8c #5843. When I put these in and added a little gas inside carb it bacfied. I switched wires thinking I crossed them and it backfired again. Don't know if this means anything. Also, I am missing the hi and low jets for carb. Any ideas on what years would work for 64 power head.(i figure its cheaper to buy the whole carb with jets on ebay then just jets at marina.

If you follow the spark plug lead from the front coil, that will be the one to connect to number one (top) plug.

CJ6 are more the correct plug for that motor but those will work. The manuals actually call out J4-C but I think those are only good for catfishing weights:D I always like the J6-C's or CJ6's as they call them.

As far as your carb goes, I have an 18, but mine is a 57 model. The part number for that shows 376855. I believe with yours, it will take the shorter needle jets than mine. I believe F_R or wbeaton would be the guys to ask for part numbers for your carb.

Everything looks nice and clean in there. However when I take out both plugs and turn flywheel by hand while holding plug against motor, the spark is scarce and weak. It seems like I have to turn it through two compressions to get one spark. I tried this on my working 6hp and it sparks with one compression.

Clean points and set them to .020" and try again. If spark is still inconsistent, you'll probably have to pull the flywheel to see what's going on.

Our points generally parallel to eachother. These look a little angled and stagard.

Contacts should line up - if they are staggered, the little clip that holds the two halves together may be missing or not lined up.
